Building With Straw Bales 2 Day Course April 26th – 28th 2019

The Course starts with an introduction and talk with Ruth on Friday 8th after dinner at 7pm.

I will teach you the basic skills needed to make a leather belt and a simple coin purse. With these skills you will then be able to go on to make bags, simple sandals and shoes as well as repairs to existing things you might have which need a bit of TLC!

We will be using traditional oak bark tanned leather from J & FJ Baker in Colyton, which is only a few miles away from Monkton Wyld. This workshop presents a wonderful opportunity to work with this beautiful and timeless material.

“The skills I pass on don’t require machines, in fact I made it a requirement of the work I do that I wouldn’t use any materials or tools which I wouldn’t be able to make or fix myself if the electrics got cut off or the oil ran out. This means that it’s accessible for you too,” says Ruth.  “It’s an almost meditative process, quietly stitching away”.

Through a pared down palette of materials and processes, I hope to demonstrate individual style, simplicity and quality.

You will learn about and how to:

– condition leather for a water-resistant finish

– stitch using the two-needle traditional saddler’s stitch

– bevel and burnish raw edges for a professional finish

– fit buckles and fastenings

– learn where leather comes from and how to make better choices when buying leather products

– work in a slow and thoughtful way, therefore maximising your enjoyment in the process.

Leather worker  https://www.ruthpullan.co.uk/  specialises in creating hand stitched bags and accessories using high quality British materials. She trained at the Cumbria School of Saddlery.
